Pyeongchang - Local Delicacies

  • Pyeongchang Hwangtae-gui (Grilled dried pollack)

    A birthplace of Hwangtae, Hoenggye-ri of Daegwallyeong-myeon sees drying of pollack through snow until it becomes golden-colored and tasty. Only then it earns the name "Hwangtae." Repeating the freezing and melting process, well-dried Hwangtae gives off soft taste reminiscent of "deodeok," a mountain plant, so it was also called "deodeok pollack." Its deep taste reflects a long aging process completed in fiercely cold and snowy weather of Daegwallyeong.

  • Pyeongchang Memil Makguksu (buckwheat noodles)

    A background to Lee Hyo Seok's novel "When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom" Pyeongchang is truly home to memil as the title of novel suggests. Wide memil flower field depicted in novel is a reality as a great amount of memil is produced in Pyeongchang. Memil Makguksu is a renowned dish from Pyeongchang. As Gangwon-do's speciality food, our ancestors started enjoying the food a long time ago. Pyeongchang's highlands characteristic gives perfect conditions to farm memil, bountiful in harvest and great in quality, placing Pyeongchang memil's taste above those of other regions.

  • Gangwon Namul Bap (seasoned vegetables rice)

    To introduce Gangwon food culture to the world as the 2018 Olympics neared, Gangwon-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services developed this rice dish. The center chose oryun rice, oryun potato, and sannamul as the main ingredients, ensuring healthiness of the product. Although it does not look quite fancy, the combination of healthy ingredients represents the intrinsic taste of Gangwon-do, simple, clean and healthy.
